Sunrise Sentiments

“Forever is composed of nows.” – Emily Dickinson

In the mornings, I go out and feed horses before heading to work. Since I do it before 7 o’clock, the chore has afforded me many opportunities to see the sun rise, so most days I do not mind the early start. As much as I enjoy a gorgeous sunrise, time and again I am amazed at how quickly the day breaks. A perfectly painted sky emerges at first light, but moments later it is gone and the pastels fade fast as the day overtakes the night. One must enjoy the sunrise while it is there, because it will not wait until you are paying attention to the magic. Do you know something else? A picture never seems to capture the true beauty of a sunrise. While it may be pretty, it never quite portrays the it factor. I figure that is one more bit of evidence that a sunrise is meant to be enjoyed in the moment.

Is that not true of so many beautiful things?

I got to reflecting on this the other morning, because the sky was so beautiful. It was absolutely breathtaking, but by the time I fed my horses and hit the road for work, the show was over. It was one of those moments that hit the right way at the right time, and I have not stopped thinking about it since. It struck me as another one of nature’s commentaries on life.

With each passing year, I become more aware of how time flies. If there is something or someone in your life that you cherish, the reality is that it is only temporary. Things change. Does that have to be a gloomy thought? I suppose it depends on your viewpoint, but for me it is a reminder to savor the treasures that are right in front of you while they are right in front of you.

My hope is that you are left thinking about the “sunrises” in your life; those beautiful things which are in front of you right now and meant to be appreciated while they last. Who or what are they? And when is the last time you even thought to list them in your mind?

Just remember–the sunrise does not wait, so enjoy the view.
