Time Undefined

"One day, you're 17 and you're planning for someday. And then quietly, without you ever really noticing, someday is today. And then someday is yesterday. And this is your life." – John Green

High school graduation ceremonies are taking place all over the country, and I find it nearly impossible not to think back on mine. I do not remember anything particularly earth-shattering about it, but when I reminisce, I tend to get stuck on how quickly the time has passed.

Early in my teaching career, a high school classmate taught in the same school as me for a time. One day, we crossed paths in the copy room, and she said, “This year will be five years since we graduated!”

Whoa,” I thought, “Five years already?”

That was almost fifteen years ago. . .

I find it hard to wrap my head around the idea that twenty years of adulthood could have happened so quickly because it sure does not feel like that much time has elapsed. Our lives are filled with different challenges. There are days that we think will never end. Sometimes, in a low period, one may feel that every day slowly crawls. On the flip side, during busy periods the days fly by one after another. When we are having a great time, the hours seem like minutes. The kicker? The days, whether easy or hard, fun or agonizing, peaceful or chaotic, all converge into one brief vapor that makes up our lives.

In spite of the efforts of many philosophers to describe and explain the passage of time, there remains an undefinable, elusive quality of it that seems just beyond the human grasp. We have all heard, “Time flies when you’re having fun.” I think the truth is more simply, “Time flies.”
