“Don’t underestimate the power of vision and direction. These are irresistible forces, able to transform what might appear to be unconquerable obstacles into traversable pathways and expanding opportunities. – Jordan Peterson
“Have you experienced any changes in your vision?”
“Nothing extreme, but it’s hard to clip my fingernails now without my glasses,” I chuckled.
“It won’t be long until you have one of those big birthdays. So don’t be alarmed if you experience more noticeable changes in your vision.”
That was an exchange from my recent visit to the optometrist. My eyesight barely changes year over year, but ten years ago, I did not need my ‘specs’ to do my nails. C’est la vie.
“...noticeable changes in your vision.”
Afterward, something about that gripped my thoughts for days.
It is not necessary to reach a milestone birthday before experiencing noticeable changes in your vision. I am not talking about eyesight. I mean your vision. Some might call it perspective or viewpoint.
My perspective has changed quite a bit in the past ten years. Throughout life, we cover a lot of ground. It is like ascending a mountain to see a beautiful view (I enjoy horseback riding and hiking, so it is an easy analogy for me). At times, we may be on a mountain peak enjoying all of the advantages of the elevation, the crisp fresh air, the peace and quiet, and the unobstructed field of view. Other times, we may find ourselves in a valley, able to see what is right in front of us and little else, seeking the light that breaks through the trees, and wondering just how much farther we must climb. Whatever the case, none of us are in the same place for long, and maybe that is something to keep in mind, too.
Day to day, it is possible to teeter between nearsightedness and farsightedness, and we all have our blindspots (but I will save that for later). Sometimes, a person enjoys the “here and now,” while at other times choosing to delay momentary pleasure for a more meaningful long term gain. With time comes the benefit of experience, and the journey continues. At this point, I could say that a year from now, I will see things differently than I do today. That would be true. However, life often reminds me that the events of a single day, or even a single moment, can change my outlook.
I am not a professional counselor or anything even close. I am just a person who goes in for an eye exam and leaves with deep thoughts. Who knows, maybe some of you are like that, too.
Have you experienced any changes in your vision?
